🚐🌃 Chad, Agaricus, and the Midnight RV Race 🌃🚐

One evening, after everyone had fallen asleep, the RV was perfectly quiet.

Echo was asleep.

Che-Ni-Mon was asleep.

Lily was asleep.

Mom was asleep.

Only Chad and Agaricus Bisporus were still awake.

Then Chad found something.

The RV keys.

Chad slowly held them up.

“Agaricus.”

Agaricus looked over.

“No.”

“I didn’t even say anything.”

“I know exactly what you’re thinking.”

Five minutes later they were sitting in the front seats.

Agaricus sat behind the wheel.

Chad sat beside her.

The RV rumbled to life.

The kittens looked at each other.

“This is probably a bad idea.”

said Agaricus.

“A legendary idea.”

corrected Chad.

The RV rolled into the city.

Neon lights glowed.

Buildings stretched high into the sky.

Cars filled the streets.

The kittens felt like explorers.

Everything was going perfectly.

Until they missed a turn.

Then another.

Then another.

Soon they found themselves entering a brightly lit street filled with cheering crowds.

Cars lined both sides of the road.

Music blasted.

Lights flashed.

Engines rumbled.

A man wearing sunglasses approached the RV.

He looked at the giant vehicle.

Then looked through the windshield.

And saw…

Two kittens.

The man blinked.

Then blinked again.

Surely he was tired.

He leaned closer.

Still kittens.

“Huh.”

The man scratched his head.

Then pointed toward the starting line.

“You racing?”

The kittens looked at one another.

Chad grinned.

Agaricus grinned.

Together they answered:

“Meow!”

The man nodded.

“Good enough.”

And walked away.

Inside the RV, however…

The translation was slightly different.

“We are now.”

said Chad.

Agaricus nodded.

“We are now.”

A few moments later the crowd began counting down.

THREE!

TWO!

ONE!

🚦 GO!

The sports cars launched forward.

The RV…

did not.

It moved.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

One car passed.

Then another.

Then another.

The crowd laughed.

“The RV is getting smoked!”

Agaricus gripped the wheel.

“This is embarrassing.”

Chad pointed dramatically.

“More pedal!”

“I’m already pressing it!”

“Press it harder!”

So Chad climbed down.

And began helping.

With both paws he shoved the accelerator.

“I AM THE PEDAL MASTER!”

The RV immediately picked up speed.

A little.

Still not enough.

Meanwhile, the noise finally woke Echo.

She stumbled into the front of the RV.

“What is happening?”

“We accidentally entered a street race.”

Echo blinked.

“…nice.”

Without hesitation she jumped onto the dashboard.

“I’ll navigate.”

“You don’t know the course.”

said Agaricus.

“Neither do you.”

“Fair.”

The race continued.

The RV remained stuck near the back.

Then came the sharpest corner on the course.

A huge sweeping turn around a city plaza.

Cars ahead slammed on their brakes.

Agaricus narrowed her eyes.

Chad pointed dramatically.

“FULL SEND.”

Echo pointed.

“THAT WAY.”

The kittens all nodded.

“FULL SEND.”

The RV entered the corner.

The tires squealed.

The crowd gasped.

The RV slid sideways.

A perfect drift.

Not a good drift.

A flawless drift.

The giant RV floated around the entire corner.

The crowd erupted.

Cars scattered.

The RV shot past them all.

During the drift Agaricus glanced toward the crowd.

And froze.

Standing among the cheering spectators was the Lost Man.

The same man who once ignored every sign.

Only now he looked different.

Hopeful.

Peaceful.

Confident.

And he was cheering louder than anyone.

“GO RV GUARDIANS!”

The RV flew past.

The Lost Man tipped his hat.

Agaricus smiled.

Then the drift ended.

And suddenly…

they were winning.

The RV blasted through the city.

One car behind them.

Then none.

They had taken first.

Unfortunately…

the race was loud.

Very loud.

Which finally woke Lily.

And Che-Ni-Mon.

Che-Ni-Mon appeared first.

“WHY ARE WE MOVING?!”

Then she looked outside.

Saw the race.

Saw the speed.

And immediately screamed.

“WHY ARE WE MOVING SO FAST?!”

Lily appeared seconds later.

She took one look.

The city.

The race.

The crowd.

The RV somehow winning.

Then she sighed.

“I don’t even know why I’m surprised anymore.”

Minutes later the finish line appeared.

🏁

The RV crossed first.

The crowd exploded.

Confetti filled the sky.

The kittens screamed.

“WE WON!”

Even Echo was celebrating.

Che-Ni-Mon was celebrating because it was over.

Lily was simply relieved they were still alive.

At the finish line the man with the sunglasses stood staring.

“The RV won!”

someone shouted.

“No way.”

“The kittens did it!”

“What kittens?”

“The kittens driving the RV!”

The man looked at the RV.

Looked at the crowd.

Looked at the tiny paw prints on the steering wheel.

Then slowly removed his sunglasses.

“…I’m never telling anyone this story.”

The RV hurried home.

The keys were returned.

The RV was parked perfectly.

Everyone climbed back into bed.

The next morning seemed normal.

Almost.

Mom walked outside.

Then stopped.

On the back of the RV was a giant racing number sticker.

#01

Mom stared at it.

Then slowly turned toward the kittens.

The kittens froze.

“Why…”

Mom began.

“…does our RV have a racing number on it?”

Silence.

Chad looked away.

Agaricus looked away.

Echo looked away.

Che-Ni-Mon looked away.

Even Lily looked away despite having nothing to do with it.

Mom raised an eyebrow.

Then smiled.

A knowing smile.

The kind of smile that said she already knew exactly what happened.

“Oh my goodness.”

she laughed.

“What am I going to do with you kittens?”

Nobody answered.

Mostly because everyone knew she wasn’t actually upset.

Deep down, she loved the chaos.

The adventures.

The stories nobody would ever believe.

And somehow…

Against all odds…

Her kittens had won a street race in an RV.

That evening, while everyone napped, Mom quietly stepped outside and noticed something else.

A small trophy hidden beneath a bush.

1st Place

Mom picked it up.

Looked toward the RV.

Then laughed to herself.

“I knew it.”

Inside the RV, Chad and Agaricus pretended to be asleep.

Very badly.
