🌙 Chad, Agaricus: Saving the Night! 🌙
On a quiet night, long after everyone in the RV had gone to sleep, two little kittens were still awake.
Chad sat by the window.
Agaricus Bisporus sat beside him.
Outside stretched an endless field beneath a sky full of stars.
“You thinking what I’m thinking?” asked Chad.
“We’re absolutely not supposed to leave the RV.”
“So that’s a yes?”
Agaricus sighed.
“That’s a yes.”
⸻
The two kittens slipped quietly out the door and wandered into the moonlit night.
The air was cool.
The stars were bright.
And far in the distance, they noticed someone walking alone.
A man.
A lost man.
⸻
The kittens followed quietly.
The man didn’t seem dangerous.
He seemed… confused.
Like he had been walking for a very long time.
As they watched, the man approached a giant wooden sign planted in the ground.
Written across it were the words:
“PRIDE ROAD — DANGER AHEAD.”
Beside it was another path.
A safer path.
A gentler path.
The man looked at both.
Then shrugged.
“I know better.”
And walked straight toward Pride Road.
⸻
The kittens exchanged a glance.
Moments later, the ground beneath the man cracked open.
The kittens quickly ran ahead.
Chad knocked a loose branch into the crack.
Agaricus wedged a stone beneath it.
The man stumbled…
But caught himself.
⸻
“Whoa!”
He stepped back safely.
The crack sealed shut behind him.
The man scratched his head.
“That was lucky.”
He looked down and noticed the kittens.
“Well thank you, little ones.”
He smiled.
Then continued walking.
⸻
The kittens felt proud.
“We saved him!” whispered Chad.
Agaricus smiled.
“Maybe he’ll pay attention now.”
⸻
A little farther ahead stood another sign.
This one read:
“PRIDE ROAD CONTINUES — TURN BACK.”
The man stopped.
Read every word.
Looked directly at it.
Then laughed.
“I’ve come this far.”
And continued.
⸻
Seconds later, a falling branch struck him.
Not hard enough to stop him.
But hard enough to hurt.
The man grabbed his shoulder.
“Ouch.”
The kittens stared.
⸻
“He read it,” said Chad.
“He definitely read it,” agreed Agaricus.
“So why did he still walk into it?”
“I don’t know.”
⸻
The two kittens decided they couldn’t leave him.
Not yet.
⸻
As the night continued, more signs appeared.
One warned of loose stones.
One warned of deep mud.
One warned of thorn bushes.
Each sign stood clearly in the path.
Each sign offered another route.
Each sign was easy to understand.
And every single time…
The man ignored it.
⸻
The kittens tried everything.
They tugged at his pant leg.
They stood in front of him.
They meowed.
They pointed.
They ran toward safer paths.
⸻
Sometimes he got hurt badly.
Sometimes only a little.
Sometimes he narrowly avoided disaster.
But somehow…
The closer he came to understanding the signs…
The less severe his injuries became.
⸻
Finally, they reached the last sign.
It was larger than all the others.
Brighter than all the others.
Impossible to miss.
⸻
The sign simply read:
“STOP. LOOK. LISTEN.”
⸻
The man stood before it.
Read every word.
Then walked right past it.
⸻
Immediately he tripped.
Tumbled down a hill.
Rolled through brush.
Splashed into a creek.
And landed in a muddy heap.
⸻
The kittens rushed down.
The man sat there covered in dirt.
Bruised.
Tired.
Frustrated.
⸻
“Why does this keep happening to me?” he cried.
“Why do I keep getting hurt?”
⸻
Chad climbed onto a nearby rock and shook the mud from his fur.
“Because you don’t listen to us!”
Agaricus nodded.
“We’ve been trying to help you all night.”
“We pulled your pant leg.”
“We pointed toward safer paths.”
“We even jumped in front of you.”
Chad sat down and flicked his tail.
“But you never listened.”
The man laughed.
A tired laugh.
A broken laugh.
Then he looked at the two kittens and smiled.
“If I haven’t been listening to giant signs,” he said, “what makes you think I’d listen to two little kittens?”
The kittens looked at each other.
And for the first time that night…
the man seemed to understand something
⸻
The kittens sat quietly.
For a moment nobody spoke.
Then Chad offered a paw.
Agaricus offered the other.
The man smiled and accepted.
Together they helped him stand.
⸻
“You should come back to the RV with us,” said Chad.
“Mom makes everyone back home feel better.”
Agaricus nodded.
“And there are snacks.”
⸻
The man smiled.
A genuine smile this time.
But then he looked toward the horizon.
His expression changed.
⸻
Far away stood a being unlike anything the kittens had ever seen.
It floated above the earth.
Silent.
Radiant.
Covered in countless eyes that shimmered like stars.
Millions upon millions of eyes.
Watching.
Knowing.
Patient.
⸻
The kittens froze.
The man stared.
Not in fear.
In wonder.
⸻
“I think…” he whispered.
“I think that’s who put up the signs.”
⸻
The being drifted silently through the night.
Not forcing.
Not pulling.
Simply leading.
⸻
The man watched it disappear into the distance.
Then smiled.
A hopeful smile.
⸻
“Maybe if I learn to follow where He leads…”
The man looked down at the signs scattered along the road.
“…maybe I’ll stop getting hurt.”
⸻
He turned back toward the kittens.
“When I figure out how to follow the signs, I’ll gladly see if there’s still room in RV Guardians. Good bye for now my little kittens”
⸻
His grin was enormous.
The kind of grin that comes when someone finally realizes they’ve been walking the wrong direction.
⸻
The kittens smiled back.
Then began trotting home.
⸻
Halfway back, Chad looked over his shoulder.
“You think he’ll actually figure it out?”
Agaricus thought for a moment.
The stars reflected in her eyes.
⸻
“That man might be crazy.”
Chad laughed.
“Definitely.”
“And he might not even listen to Mom.”
“Nobody listens to Mom.”
⸻
The two kittens giggled.
Then Agaricus looked toward the horizon one last time.
Toward the distant glowing figure.
Toward the road filled with signs.
Toward the man beginning his journey.
⸻
“Maybe he will,” she said softly.
“Just maybe…”
She smiled.
“…that quadrillion-eyed being creates miracles and teaches that man to read for once.”
Both kittens laughed out loud.
⸻
And beneath the stars, Chad and Agaricus made it safely back to the RV.
While somewhere in the distance…
A lost man finally began paying attention to the signs.
