π²π₯ Day Three at Cloudcroft: The Morning of a Thousand Friends π₯π²
The third morning of camping began much earlier than anyone expected.
The campfire had burned low during the night.
The stars still filled the sky.
The forest was quiet.
Or...
It had been.
The night before, the RV Guardians had stayed up late around the campfire.
They roasted marshmallows.
Shared stories.
Laughed until their bellies hurt.
And enjoyed far too many snacks.
When everyone finally became sleepy...
Mom smiled.
"I'm heading to bed first."
"You all don't stay up too late."
"We won't!"
said Chad.
"...Probably."
added Agaricus.
Mom smiled knowingly and climbed into her tent.
The cats stayed around the fire a little longer.
Dragon Claw watched the stars.
Echo chased fireflies.
The kittens imagined shapes in the clouds.
Che-Ni-Mon kept hearing mysterious noises in the woods.
Lily quietly enjoyed the peaceful crackling fire.
Eventually...
Everyone wandered off to sleep.
Unfortunately...
They forgot one important thing.
The snacks.
The next morning...
Mom was suddenly awakened.
"MEEEEEEEEEEOW!!"
The flap of her tent burst open.
Che-Ni-Mon rushed inside, breathing so fast she could barely speak.
"MOM!"
"MOM!"
"MOM!"
"What happened?"
Mom asked, sitting up.
"You..."
Che-Ni-Mon gulped.
"...need..."
"...to come..."
"...RIGHT NOW!"
Mom quickly stepped outside.
Then froze.
The entire campsite had become...
A breakfast party.
A gentle black bear sat happily beside the campfire.
A mama deer stood nearby while her tiny fawn nibbled happily.
A fluffy skunk snoozed beside a log.
A beautiful mountain lion stretched lazily in the morning sun.
Two squirrels chased each other around the picnic table.
A capybara quietly munched on the last carrot.
A calm wolf rested beneath a pine tree.
And somehow...
For reasons nobody could explain...
A cheerful little quokka was smiling beside the cooler.
Every single animal had a full belly.
Because every single snack the cats had forgotten outside...
Had disappeared.
Mom's eyes grew wide.
"...Oh..."
"...my..."
"...goodness."
Che-Ni-Mon whispered frantically,
"Don't wake anybody!"
"They'll wake up!"
"They're already here!"
But it was too late.
Mom's heart was already overflowing.
She quietly walked to the mama deer.
"Hello, sweetheart."
She gently scratched behind her ears.
Then gave her a little kiss on the forehead.
The deer happily leaned into the hug.
Next came the squirrels.
"Oh, look at you two!"
Tiny hugs.
Tiny forehead kisses.
Tiny happy squeaks.
The wolf politely accepted a gentle scratch behind the ears.
The skunk happily wagged its fluffy tail.
The capybara leaned into the biggest hug imaginable.
Even the bear rolled onto his back asking for belly rubs.
Che-Ni-Mon covered her face.
"Oh no..."
"Mom's making friends again."
One by one...
The sleepy animals slowly opened their eyes.
One by one...
The sleepy cats woke up too.
Echo stretched.
"...Why is there a bear?"
Chad rubbed his eyes.
"...Why is there a capybara?"
Agaricus blinked.
"...Why is there a quokka?"
Nobody knew.
Least of all the quokka.
Dragon Claw smiled from above.
"I've learned it's best not to question magical mornings."
Mom suddenly clapped her hands.
"Everyone stay here!"
"I'll make breakfast!"
She hurried toward the RV.
Che-Ni-Mon immediately followed.
"Wait for me!"
"I trust Mom..."
"...but that's still a lot of animals."
Soon delicious smells filled the campsite.
Fresh fruit.
Crunchy vegetables.
Seeds.
Nuts.
Warm oatmeal.
Tiny treats for tiny friends.
Big treats for big friends.
Mom spent the entire morning making snacks.
Every time she finished one plate...
Another hungry friend appeared.
Echo quickly became friends with the gentle mountain lion.
The two spent the morning racing through the meadow, leaping over fallen logs and chasing butterflies.
The kittens wandered from animal to animal.
"Hi!"
said Chad to the squirrels.
"Good morning!"
said Agaricus to the deer.
The little fawn followed the kittens around for nearly an hour.
Dragon Claw happily chatted with the bear about fishing stories.
Che-Ni-Mon never wandered far from Mom.
Just in case.
Every now and then she'd whisper,
"...Are we sure this is okay?"
Mom smiled.
"It's a very special morning."
"I think everyone just came to say hello."
Lily looked around the incredibly crowded campsite.
The laughing.
The playing.
The singing.
The chatting.
She sighed.
"...There are entirely too many friends."
She climbed onto her favorite camping chair.
Curled into a ball.
Covered her face with her tail.
And somehow...
Managed to take a nap anyway.
As the afternoon sun warmed the forest, Mom sat in the middle of the campsite.
Surrounded by cats.
Surrounded by forest friends.
Laughing.
Singing little songs.
Sharing hugs.
Passing out snacks.
For just one magical day...
It felt as though the whole forest had become one giant family.
As evening approached, the animals slowly wandered back into the woods.
The bear gave one final wave.
The wolf bowed politely.
The mama deer nuzzled Mom's hand.
The squirrels chattered their goodbyes.
The capybara smiled.
The mountain lion gave Echo one last playful nod before disappearing into the trees.
And the little quokka...
Smiled the entire way home.
That night, as everyone settled around the campfire once more, Chad smiled.
"I don't think anyone would believe today."
Agaricus looked toward the quiet forest.
"Maybe..."
"...it wasn't meant to be believed."
"...Just remembered."
The stars twinkled overhead.
The campfire crackled softly.
And somewhere deep in the forest...
New friends slept peacefully too.
