πŸΎπŸ’™ The New Friend Named Jack πŸ’™πŸΎ

One warm afternoon, the RV Guardians were playing outside.

Chad and Agaricus were pretending sticks were pirate swords.

Echo was chasing butterflies.

Che-Ni-Mon was watching carefully from a blanket.

Lily was enjoying a peaceful nap beneath the RV.

Dragon Claw rested nearby, his giant wings shading everyone from the afternoon sun.

Suddenly...

The kittens noticed someone sitting quietly beneath a little tree.

A tiny orange-and-white kitten.

He watched them play...

But never joined.

Chad tilted his head.

"I don't think I've seen him before."

Agaricus nodded.

"Me neither."

The two kittens slowly walked over.

"Hi!"

said Chad.

"My name's Chad!"

"And I'm Agaricus Bisporus!"

The little kitten looked up.

He smiled...

Just a little.

"...I'm Jack."

he said quietly.

"It's nice to meet you."

The kittens noticed something.

Jack had little scars on his ears.

A few on his nose.

One across his shoulder.

Chad blinked.

"...Did those hurt?"

Jack looked down.

"They used to."

"I came from a foster home."

he said softly.

"I had a rough start before people helped me."

The kittens listened quietly.

Jack smiled a little.

"Sometimes..."

"...I worry people only notice my scars."

Chad immediately sat beside him.

"I noticed them."

Jack looked worried.

"But then..."

Chad smiled.

"...I noticed you."

Agaricus nodded.

"And you seem pretty awesome."

Jack blinked.

"...Really?"

Echo wandered over after hearing new voices.

She smiled.

"Scars just mean you've got stories."

Che-Ni-Mon carefully walked over too.

"I think..."

she whispered,

"...they make you look brave."

Jack's eyes grew a little brighter.

Lily opened one eye from beneath the RV.

She looked at Jack for a moment.

Then calmly said,

"...Everyone gets marks."

"The good ones..."

"...don't change who you are."

She closed her eye again.

That was the longest speech Lily had given all week.

Dragon Claw lowered his giant head beside the kittens.

"You know..."

he smiled warmly,

"...the strongest hearts usually have a few scratches."

Jack looked around.

Nobody seemed afraid of him.

Nobody stared anymore.

Nobody treated him differently.

Chad suddenly stood.

"Enough talking!"

"Wanna play pirates?"

Jack hesitated.

"I've... never played pirates."

Chad gasped dramatically.

"WHAT?!"

Agaricus laughed.

"Then today's the perfect day."

The afternoon quickly filled with adventure.

Jack climbed logs with Echo.

He helped Chad search for imaginary treasure.

Agaricus taught him how to build the perfect blanket fort.

Che-Ni-Mon even let Jack borrow one of her favorite blankets during snack time.

"Just..."

she smiled shyly,

"...give it back."

"I promise."

Jack laughed.

Even Lily let Jack nap beside her for a little while.

"...Don't snore."

she mumbled.

"I don't."

"Good."

Before anyone realized...

The sun had begun to set.

A car pulled up nearby.

A kind foster parent stepped out.

"There you are, Jack."

Jack smiled.

"I had the best afternoon."

The kittens walked him to the little gate.

None of them wanted the day to end.

Just before Jack left...

Chad spoke up.

"Hey..."

Jack turned around.

"...Would you like to be our friend?"

Jack blinked.

"...Your friend?"

Agaricus nodded.

"Not just today."

"Any day."

Echo smiled.

"You already fit in."

Che-Ni-Mon nodded.

"And next time..."

"...I'll let you borrow my second favorite blanket."

Lily looked up.

"...That's a very big deal."

Everyone laughed.

Jack couldn't stop smiling.

"I'd really like that."

"...I'd love to be your friend."

The kittens all rushed forward into one big group hug.

Dragon Claw smiled so warmly that even the evening breeze seemed gentler.

As Jack climbed into the car, he waved through the window.

"I'll see you again!"

"We'll be waiting!"

the kittens shouted together.

The car disappeared down the road.

For a little while...

Nobody said anything.

Then Chad smiled.

"I think..."

"...we made a really good friend today."

Agaricus nodded.

"I think so too."

Far down the road...

Jack looked out the window.

For the first time in a long time...

He wasn't thinking about the hard days behind him.

He was thinking about the friends waiting for him ahead.

And somehow...

The scars didn't seem nearly as important anymore.
