πŸŒ©οΈπŸŒ™ The Stormy Night at the RV πŸŒ™πŸŒ©οΈ

One evening, the RV Guardians were parked on a quiet hill far from town.

The sky was gray.

The wind was growing stronger.

And Lily didn't like it one bit.

"We should all stay inside tonight," she said.

Echo peeked out the window.

"Looks like a storm."

Agaricus Bisporus looked up from her book.

"A big one."

Chad grinned.

"Awesome."

Che-Ni-Mon immediately froze.

A distant rumble rolled across the sky.

Rrrrrrrumble...

Che-Ni-Mon's ears flattened.

"That was thunder."

"It was very far away," said Agaricus.

Another rumble sounded.

A little louder.

RRRRRUMBLE...

Che-Ni-Mon climbed onto the couch.

Rain began tapping against the RV roof.

Tiny drops at first.

Then more.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

The whole RV echoed with the sound.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

TapTapTapTapTap.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

The kittens gathered near the window.

Lightning flashed.

For a brief moment the desert turned white.

Then darkness returned.

A few seconds laterβ€”

BOOOOOM!

The thunder cracked through the night.

Che-Ni-Mon jumped three feet into the air.

"I DON'T LIKE IT!"

she cried.

Chad tried to help.

"It's just noise."

Another flash lit the sky.

BOOOOOM!

Che-Ni-Mon immediately disagreed.

Soon the storm was directly overhead.

The RV shook with wind.

Rain hammered the roof.

Lightning flashed constantly.

Thunder rolled through the night.

Che-Ni-Mon hid under a blanket.

Then another blanket.

Then a third blanket.

Only her eyes remained visible.

The other kittens became worried.

They had never seen her this frightened.

Echo crawled beside her.

"When I get scared," Echo said softly, "I pretend I'm on an adventure."

Che-Ni-Mon peeked out.

"Does it work?"

"Sometimes."

Agaricus joined them.

"When I get scared, I count things."

"Count what?"

"Anything."

She pointed.

"The pillows."

"The blankets."

"The stars when we can see them."

Lily sat beside her youngest sister.

"You don't have to be brave by yourself."

Che-Ni-Mon looked around.

Everyone had gathered around her.

Nobody was laughing.

Nobody was teasing.

Nobody was telling her to stop being scared.

They were just... there.

Another loud thunderclap shook the RV.

CRAAAACK-BOOOOOM!

Che-Ni-Mon buried her face.

Then Chad had an idea.

A surprisingly good one.

"Blanket fort."

Everyone looked at him.

"Blanket fort," he repeated.

Five minutes later the living room had disappeared.

In its place stood the greatest blanket fort in RV history.

Pillows lined the floor.

Blankets hung from chairs.

Flashlights glowed softly inside.

The storm still raged outside.

But inside the fort felt warm.

Safe.

Cozy.

The kittens piled together.

Echo told stories.

Agaricus counted thunder between lightning flashes.

Lily kept everyone close.

Chad made shadow puppets on the blanket walls.

Even Che-Ni-Mon began smiling.

A little.

Hours passed.

The storm slowly moved away.

The thunder became quieter.

The rain softened.

The wind calmed.

Finally, the clouds began to break.

Moonlight slipped through the RV window.

The storm was gone.

Che-Ni-Mon peeked outside.

The desert glistened from the rain.

Everything was peaceful.

"We made it," she whispered.

"Of course we did," said Chad.

Che-Ni-Mon looked around the fort.

At Echo.

At Agaricus.

At Lily.

At Chad.

Then she smiled.

"You know..."

she said.

"The storm was still scary."

Everyone nodded.

"But it wasn't nearly as scary with all of you here."

The kittens snuggled closer.

Soon one by one they drifted off to sleep.

The blanket fort remained standing.

The moon shone outside.

And somewhere in the quiet RV, Che-Ni-Mon slept peacefully, knowing that no matter how loud the thunder became...

she would never face it alone.
