The RV was unusually loud.
Not because Chad was pretending to be a pirate.
Not because Echo had the zoomies.
Not because Dragon Claw had accidentally shaken the RV with one of his landings.
Today…
Everyone was watching the World Cup Final.
Mexico.
Versus.
England.
The score was tied late in the match…
Until England scored.

Only ten minutes remained.
The Mexican coach paced nervously.
“We need a miracle…”
he whispered.
Just then…
A tiny knock came from the locker room door.

The coach opened it.
Five cats.
One enormous dragon.
“…Can I help you?”
Chad tipped his little captain’s hat.
“We heard you could use some substitutes.”
The coach blinked.
“…You’re cats.”
“We’re RV Guardians.”
corrected Agaricus.
Dragon Claw smiled from outside the stadium.
“I’ll stay in the stands.”
The coach looked at the scoreboard.
Then back at the cats.
Then sighed.
“…Honestly…”
“…why not?”
The stadium announcer echoed across the arena.
“Coming on for Mexico…”
“…the RV Guardians!”
The crowd went silent.
Then erupted with laughter.
“Are those kittens?”
“They’re so tiny!”
“They’ll never survive!”
Echo quietly stretched.
“They’re talking a lot.”
Che-Ni-Mon whispered,
“…There are a lot of people.”
“I’ve decided I’m nervous.”
Lily looked around from the bench.
“I’m staying here.”
“No soccer?”
asked Chad.
“I’ll guard the bench.”

The referee blew the whistle.
Ten minutes remained.
England attacked immediately.
Echo sprinted back on defense.
She slid in front of the striker.
“Three-Claw Style…”
she whispered dramatically.
“…Perfect Tackle.”

The ball rolled cleanly away.
The crowd roared.
“WHO IS THAT CAT?!”
Echo simply trotted away.
“Nice kick.”
Che-Ni-Mon accidentally intercepted a pass.
She squeaked.
“Oh!”
She passed the ball as quickly as possible.
“I DON’T WANT IT!”
It somehow became the perfect assist.
Agaricus smiled.
“Great pass!”
“…I meant to do that.”
Che-Ni-Mon said proudly.
Five minutes remained.
Mexico earned one final attack.
Agaricus sprinted down the left side.
She crossed the ball toward the goal.
The goalkeeper stepped forward.
Ready.
Focused.
Then…
Chad slowly walked into the penalty box.
The goalkeeper looked down.
“…A kitten?”
Chad blinked.
Tilted his head.
Made the biggest…
Roundest…
Most adorable eyes imaginable.
“…Meow?”
The goalkeeper’s heart melted.
“…Aww…”
He completely forgot about the ball.
Agaricus saw her chance.
She launched herself.
SLIIIIIDE!
Her paws connected perfectly.
GOOOOOOOAL!!
The stadium exploded.
MEXICO 3… ENGLAND 3!
The crowd chanted,
“MÉ-XI-CO!”
“MÉ-XI-CO!”
“MÉ-XI-CO!”
The referee blew the whistle.
Extra Time.
Everyone was exhausted.
Dragon Claw leaned over the stadium from outside.
“You’ve got this!”
Mom smiled proudly from the stands.
“I always knew you could.”
The final minutes ticked away.
Five minutes remained.
Echo stole the ball one last time.
She passed to Che-Ni-Mon.
Che-Ni-Mon panicked.
“I DON’T WANT IT!”
She kicked it as hard as she could.
The ball bounced perfectly toward Chad.
Chad grinned.
“Gum-Gum…”
Agaricus sighed.
“You’re playing soccer.”

Chad gently tapped the ball instead.
Right into Agaricus’s path.
She didn’t hesitate.

Another.
Then—
BOOM!
A perfect shot flew into the top corner.
The goalkeeper dove.
Too late.

Mexico led…

The crowd shook the entire stadium.
“MÉ-XI-CO!”
“MÉ-XI-CO!”
“MÉ-XI-CO!”
The final whistle blew.
Mexico had won.
The players rushed onto the field.
The kittens disappeared beneath a mountain of celebrating teammates.
Dragon Claw breathed a giant burst of harmless golden fire high into the sky.
Even Lily stood up from the bench.
“…Good game.”
Everyone gasped.
“Lily gave us a compliment!”
“I said…”
Lily yawned.
“…good game.”
Back at the RV that night…
The championship trophy sat proudly on the table.
Chad wore his medal backward.
Agaricus carefully polished hers.
Echo quietly napped with her medal still around her neck.
Che-Ni-Mon kept telling everyone,

The whole RV gently shook.
